Newport State Park

Newport, northeast of Ellison Bay, is Wisconsin’s only formally designated wilderness park. With 2,373 acres and 11 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline it offers quiet alternatives to bustling Door County. There are evergreen and hardwood forests, wetlands, and upland meadows, with 38.3 miles of trails, all of them open for hiking. Newport has 16 backpack campsites, 13 of which can be reserved. The park also offers winter backpack camping. The CD-Rom offers a review of the backpack campsites, with photos of five of the recommended sites, and three short wmv videos of the walk-ins to sites 3, 5, and 6 near Duck Bay and Varney Point. There is a printable map of the park and campsites, with photos of Duck Bay, Europe Lake from backpack site 15, the sand dunes along the Europe Bay Trail, the main beach, and picnic area near the beach. There is information about the park's scenic wilderness hiking trails, beach and picnic area, boating and fishing, area wildlife, the Nature Center, and the nearby Mink River Estuary.
