Chequamegon National Forest - Round Lake
The boat landing (photo) and Logging Dam Trail are located on the southern shore of Round Lake. Twin Lakes campground is located nearby on the north shore of the lake.
The Round Lake Logging Dam (photos of the Logging Dam, Hiking Trail, and Picnic Area) was built in 1878 and is in the National Register of Historic Places. It was used during log drives until the early 1900's and was restored in 1995 through a partnership between the Friends of Round Lake Logging Dam, the Price County Historical Society, and the Forest Service.
Directions: Take Highway 70 west from Woodruff about 9 miles until you reach FR 144. Take FR 144 north (right) about 5 miles to the boat landing area.
Other Park Falls District Attractions:
Smith Rapids Covered Bridge: In 1991 the Forest Service replaced the bridge over the South Fork of the Flambeau River on FR 148. TYhe new bridge is patterned after the town lattice truss style covered bridge that was perfected in the 1920's and updated with new materials such as glue laminated members. The covered bridge allowed a single span crossing the river.
South Fork of the Flambeau River: This candidate Wild and Scenic River provides a rustic experience for canoeists. There are a number of class I and class II rapids as well as old logging dam structures that require some skill to navigate.
Flambeau Motorized Trail System: This 70 mile trail is open to ATV, motorcycle, and snowmobile use. The trial winds through rolling terrain.
Riley Lake Wildlife Management System: This 5,000 acre open area on Forest Road 137 is managed for sharptail grouse and other wildlife species.
Old Town Hall Museum: The Town Hall in Fifield was a government building from 1894 to 1967. It houses displays of logging artifacts, collections of household clothing and and personal items, railroad memorabilia, a Victorian living room and kitchen, and old farm equipment. Also on the site is an old country school house with school artifacts, library, and memorabilia.
